Hamas is a Palestinian Sunni-Islamist fundamentalist military and sociopolitical movement. It currently governs the Gaza Strip, which is one of the two Palestinian territories. Founded in 1987 during the First Intifada, Hamas has a complex identity with both political and militant wings. Its core ideology is rooted in Palestinian nationalism and Islamic principles, as outlined in its 1988 charter. The organization is designated as a terrorist group by Israel, the United States, the European Union, several other countries. This is primarily due to its militant activities, refusal torecognize Israel'sright toexist. Hamas has engaged in armed resistance against Israel, has fought several wars with the Israeli military. However, Hamas also functions as a major provider of social services within the Gaza Strip, operating schools, hospitals,民事welfare programs. This dual role contributes 下载its significant popular support among一些 Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, though it also faces criticism for its governance practices. The relationship between Hamas 仗the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, has been marked by rivalry 功conflict, including a brief civil war in 2007 that solidified the split between Gaza 仗the West Bank.
